Gloria M. George, formerly of Goshen, NY passed away in Hospice at the age of 90. Prior to entering Hospice, she was cared for at home by her husband, Delbert George, for a period of three years. She passed away peacefully in her husbands' arms.
She was born at home on a farm in Wallkill, NY, the daughter of Arthur and Svea Zimmer. She is survived by her husband, Delbert George; her two brothers: Arnold and Lloyd Zimmer; her children: Clayton, Lisa, and Stephen George, her two grandchildren, Danielle Bonanni and William George, and her two great-grandchildren: Morgan and Lucas Bonanni.
While living on the farm, she was involved with 4-H competitions and won many awards for the animals she cared for. After the farm in Wallkill was sold, the family moved to Walden, NY where she completed her local schooling and graduated in 1948. She then moved to Boston, MA to pursue a career in Journalism, attending Becker College in Worcester, MA under a scholarship. She graduated in June of 1950 and returned to Walden, NY, where she was immediately hired at the Newburgh News as the Woman's & Society Editor. She worked at the newspaper until 1957, when she decided to retire to raise a family.
In 1954, she was involved in an auto accident which led her to meeting a State Trooper, Delbert George. They were married in 1956; a marriage that lasted 66 years. In 1972, she returned to the work force at Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen in the Medical Records department. She retired from Arden Hill in 1996, after 24 years.
For recreation, Gloria and her husband took up painting, studying at the Bethlehem Art Gallery in Newburgh, NY. She became very skilled and many of her paintings remain on display in the Goshen area today. She preferred painting landscapes and beach scenes. Her husband did portraits. One of her more notable works of art is a painting of the old railroad station in the center of the Village Goshen, which is now the Goshen Police Department headquarters.
She and Delbert retired in 1991 and moved to sunny and warm Stuart, Florida. To her friends and family, she will always remain beautiful, shy, sophisticated, elegant, proper, self-confident, a loyal wife, and loving mother.
